THE CHRONICLES OF EXANDRIA: THE MIGHTY NEIN

Role: Concept development, art direction, narrative and art curation, visual system development, interior spread composition, cover design, deluxe packaging development, and illustration

The Chronicles of Exandria: The Mighty Nein is the third official art book based on Critical Role, a long-running web series in which professional voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons. Each volume uses curated fan artwork and in-world design to retell a different campaign. This book covers the first half of Campaign 2 and follows the Mighty Nein, a group brought together by chance and still learning to trust one another.

I returned as art director and curator, building on the design language of the first two volumes while adapting it to the darker, more introspective tone of this campaign.

Project Responsibilities

  • Concept Development:

    • I helped originate the concept for the first Critical Role Art book, returned to co-lead second art book, and was brought back as art director for the third volume, The Mighty Nein.

    • Co-conceived the Mighty Nein archival structure with Taliesin and Liam for the third volume

    • Introduced the layered annotation device used throughout the Mighty Nein book

  • Art Direction: Led the visual and narrative direction across the covers, interior, deluxe packaging, and supplemental materials. I established the overall design system and worked with Critical Role and Dark Horse to maintain consistency throughout the project. Final structural design was executed by their designer, Cindy Cacarez-Sprague.

  • Art Organization: I independently tagged and organized thousands of submitted artworks using a metadata system that Liam and I originally developed for the first volume. Each piece was labeled by:

    • Structure type: Character portrait, paired portrait, group portrait, event, or place/item

    • Keywords: Subjects, characters, and other relevant content

    • Chapter assignment: Narrative placement for non-portrait artwork

This system made the full archive searchable and allowed me to compare the available artwork against the needs of each chapter.

  • Narrative Curation: I listened to the full first half of the campaign so I could structure the book around both the plot and the characters’ development. Using the organized artwork archive, I selected work for each chapter, identified important story moments missing from the submission pool, and commissioned additional illustrations where needed. Liam and I reviewed the selections throughout layout development to make sure the finished narrative remained faithful to the campaign.

  • Interior Design: I developed the interior layout and annotation system to resemble a Cobalt Soul case file. I created sample spreads establishing the typography, placement of handwritten notes, marginalia, textures, and overall visual rhythm. Dark Horse designer Cindy Cacarez-Sprague applied this system across the final production files.

  • Spread Composition and Visual Pacing: I selected and composed the artwork across the interior spreads, considering color, style, scale, visual weight, and how individual pieces worked together across facing pages. I also used sequencing and spatial relationships to control pacing and maintain visual continuity throughout the book.

  • Cover Design: I designed the standard edition cover, featuring artwork by Matteo Scalera and Moreno Dinisio, and the deluxe edition cover, featuring my own illustration. Both incorporate the logo I originally created for the first Chronicles of Exandria volume.

  • Cover Art: The deluxe covers of the first two books centered on each campaign’s primary antagonist, first Thordak and then Vecna. The Mighty Nein had no equivalent villain at this point in the story, and much of the conflict came from within the party itself.

Instead of centering the cover on a single figure, I built a constellation of character-specific symbols around the Critical Role logo. Weapons, magical items, tattoos, animals, and personal objects represent the individual members of the party. Together, they form a group portrait without placing any one character at its center, reflecting a group that was connected but not yet unified.

  • Clamshell Development: I originated the visual concept for the deluxe clamshell, illustrated its exterior, and co-developed the packaging structure with Cindy Cacarez-Sprague. Cindy completed the final structural design.

The clamshell was designed to feel like an artifact stored in the Cobalt Soul’s archives. The deluxe package also included annotated maps, character sketches, symbolic fragments, and other fictional ephemera presented as materials collected alongside the book.

  • Material Palette and Emotional Tone: Red and black defined the first two volumes, so I chose blue to give The Mighty Nein its own identity. The color and worn texture give the cover a quieter, more restrained tone while making it feel like an aged archival document. Gold foil was carried over to maintain continuity with the earlier books.

For the clamshell, I introduced purple and mirrored silver. The purple connects the package to the campaign’s arcane elements, while the reflective silver breaks up the imagery and reinforces the idea of a fragmented group.

  • Original Artwork: I contributed two paintings of Frumpkin, one in his cat form and another showing his alternate forms. I also created a series of botanical illustrations based on in-world material associated with Yasha.
